Existing formal information about rock art recorded within Tongariro/Taupo Conservancy was found to be inadequate for management, advocacy, and protection purposes. A research project was established by the Department of Conservation to assess the origin, condition, threats, and conservation and protection needs of a number of recorded rock art sites.
